Navigating around countries not knowing the native language can be a tough thing, but listening to music and not knowing the language is a much easier endeavour. Take, for example, ”La Californie”; it’s sung in French, so if you’re not familiar with the language, you’re not going to understand the lyrics. But like all things in this world, you don’t need to understand everything to get by, and what’s being offering here from the Paris-based electronic trio, Bois Noirs, requires no French understanding. If you let the music do the talking, and let the French lyrics act an as instrument (versus trying to understand them on an intellectual level), you’re going to be in for a treat.
In what starts out as a pretty standard, electronically driven pop song quickly morphs into something that sounds like it would emerge from a drug-soaked all-nighter in the recording studio. The track is actually a cover of a piece written and composed by Étienne Roda-Gil and Julien Clerc, all the way back in 1969, apparently, but perhaps it’s that fact that gives Bois Noirs’ version such an intriguingly vintage flair. Whatever the case is (and international barriers aside), this “La California” is something big, wildly engaging, and worth every bit of your time.
